About me

Welcome to the Tosogu.cz website. My name is Roman Urban and I am a Czech craftsman specializing in making Japanese sword fittings.
The term Tosogu 刀装具 (Read tósógu.) comes from a Japanese word designating in general all decorative functional parts (tsuba, fuchi, kashira, menuki, etc.) Another commonly used word is kodogu 小道具 (Read kodógu).

My aim is to pick up the threads of ancient Japanese sword fittings-making tradition,
and to produce sword fittings corresponding with works of ancient Japanese masters.

My first attempts are dated back to 2011. At the beginning I visited a few workshops around the world but rest of the time I am a self learnerin terms of metalworking techniques.
Since 2013 I have started to make sword fittings as a full time job.

Among others there exist two common truths. The first: A self learner can achieve only limited level and need a teacher to be able to contiune in his grow. The second when you put enough effort to your work a correct person will find you eventually.

In 2016 I found my mentor in Japan who guides my further steps through  history and world of Japanese sword.

In 2018 I got my first orders from Japan.
